Liner Notes
From the time I was young, music was always playing. Old‑time Canadian fiddling was my first love, and traditional country music wasn’t far behind. Playing dances with my family over the years meant learning it all—big band tunes, pop hits, jazz standards, and a little rock and roll when the night called for it.
Fiddle Country brings together the songs and sounds that helped shape my style. Some of these tunes have been road-tested for years, while others are newer additions that felt right from the start.
The title track is an original, inspired by the Western Swing fiddle tradition of Bob Wills. Many of these songs are also featured in our live show, and I’m grateful to share this music with such talented players: my sister, Kendra Norris on piano, fiddle, accordion and vocals, Leo Stock on mandolin and lending his voice to I’ve Been Everywhere, and Steve Piticco on guitar.
Our sound is further shaped by Tyler Beckett on acoustic rhythm guitar, Darin Parise on 5-string banjo, and Dale Rivard, whose pedal steel echoes with a lonesome beauty. My buddy Jimmy Goodson has the perfect style for electric bass on track 20. I’m especially grateful to have my mom, Carolyn Woods, join us on piano for a few tracks—it makes this album all the more meaningful.
We close things out with a tune that doesn’t quite fit the mold—but it’s all in good fun. You can’t go wrong tipping your hat to The Beatles.
Thanks for listening, and welcome to Fiddle Country!
