What most of us realized was that the little things sometimes are actually the big things. Being able to see and hug your family and friends, playing cards, sports or perhaps dancing. These were the things we were no longer able to do. What helped many through these isolating and depressing times was music – recorded, online, at a distance or just in our memories.

As professional musicians, it was doubly difficult because not only did we lose our livelihood, we also lost our passion to create and open our hearts with music. Nothing can replace the adrenaline you get on stage, connecting with your bandmates and audience.

This album reflects the struggles we all endured during the lockdowns and the joy felt by the blossoming of the world post-pandemic. The last two cuts from this album perhaps sum up the feelings we all have experienced. My Cape Breton Home is a plaintive melody full of emotion and hope. It represents the longing for home and for those we have missed. Old Fashioned Hoedown is just as raw and grounded as it sounds. A year later, we started music lessons, and soon were playing piano duets. However, I really yearned to play the fiddle, just like my dad. Finally, when I was eight, our parents bought “the girls” violins. We took weekly classical violin lessons from the same teacher who had taught our dad many years earlier. As a reward for practising the scales, studies and classical repertoire, Dad taught us fiddle tunes in the style of Don Messer. That was “the fun stuff” in my opinion!

By the time I was ten, I was a regular member of ‘The Merv Woods Orchestra’, out playing for dances each weekend, all over Southwestern Ontario. I quickly learned that you had to “feel” the music, and play it so that people would want to get up and dance to whatever you played. I also learned that ‘if one fiddle was nice, two fiddles were nicer’ but if they played in harmony, it was even better! I had a natural ear for the harmony, and usually played a lyrical line that sounded almost like another melody. When “the boys” (my brothers Bruce and Scott) joined the band, we not only played for dances, but also went as a family to entertain at fairs, corporate events and churches. We transitioned into playing more shows and a few less dances, but also played the Fiddle Contest circuit starting in 1976.

I was fortunate to be awarded Canadian Champion numerous times, in various classes (Ladies, 19-45, Duet with brother Scott) over the years, as well as receiving many other titles from the prominent competitions. I have continued to play for dances and shows from those early years onward, and truly enjoy entertaining crowds with my music. I hope to see you at a Scott Woods Show sometime soon.

I have spent many hours in recording studios over the years, laying down tracks for other musicians, but it never occurred to me to do a recording of my own. After many requests by fans from all over Canada, I finally had the chance to make this album. It is a collection of some of my favourite tunes I have played at dances, contests and shows over the years.

I am so blessed to have such talented musicians and friends playing on my album. Steve Piticco, Tyler Beckett, Darin Parise and Doug Johnson – thank you all for sharing your incredible talents! He has always been my inspiration to play!

Thanks to modern technology, I am also so thrilled to have my dad, Merv (who passed away in 2003) kick off the final track! He was never so fond of playing a solo, but we found an archival recording of him and Mom playing the fiddlers’ national anthem, Ward Allen’s Maple Sugar. The rest of the family joins in to finish off the CD.

I would also like to thank my wonderful husband, Joel Norris, for his support over the last 40+ years – allowing me to travel all over the world to make others happy with my music.

So, get up and dance, or sit back and listen, and soothe your soul with the healing power of the music that my family has played for generations!

- Yours Truly, Kendra Norris

Musicians

Kendra (Woods) Norris: Fiddle and Accordion
Scott Woods: Fiddle, Bass, and Drums
Carolyn Woods: Piano
Bruce Woods: Fiddle
Elizabeth Noulty: Fiddle
Merv Woods: Fiddle
Ben Norris: Fiddle
Steve Piticco: Electric & Acoustic Guitar
Doug Johnson: Pedal Steel
Darin Parise: 5-String Banjo
Tyler Beckett: Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, and Fiddle

Credits

Produced by: Kendra Norris & Scott Woods
Musical Arrangements by: Kendra Norris & Scott Woods, SOCAN
Recorded & Mixed by: Scott Woods, McLeod Music, Fergus, Ontario
Mastered by: Doug Stronach, Eclipse Music Productions, Arthur, Ontario
Graphic Design by: Janet McGlynn, Lumin8 Strategy & Design Agency Inc., London, Ontario
Photography by: Dan Peer, Kitchener, Ontario

What's Next? I dedicate two tunes on this album to Judy and Kyle – “Duelling Fiddle and Step Dance” and “Leo’s Reel” (composed by Kyle).

Accomplished fiddler, Doug McNaughton, has influenced my music and I am thankful for his instruction and continued encouragement. Well this album is all about the sound of two fiddles – we love to play in sweet harmony! My sister Kendra and I have been playing duets on our violins since we were young. And for some reason she usually has had the distinct pleasure of playing the harmony to my lead.

But despite her song on this CD that says she’s “tired of playing second fiddle…” Kendra has a natural and impressive ability to find the harmony lines in any melody. My process of recording usually starts with a list of tune ideas and then my Mom, Carolyn will play piano with me while I try some ideas. Once we find a tune we like, we simply make an instant arrangement and record it: old school – fiddle and piano only. Then comes the challenge of fitting the rest of the band with these tracks, especially the harmony fiddle.

Some tunes on this CD Kendra did not know before we recorded them – in fact five tunes are brand new. But she heard them a couple times and said, “Okay I have a harmony line – let’s put it down…” And often she will come up with yet another harmony part to fill out the sound further.

I recently wrote a few tunes that have fast become some of my favourites. To honour Canada 150th birthday I wrote the opening tune on this CD: Sesqui-Centennial Two-Step. Grayson’s Waltz was written for my youngest nephew, Grayson Woods. Twin Fiddle Express is a song that originated as an idea to introduce our live show of the same name. It is catchy and you can sing along as well.

My Mom, Carolyn Woods grew up studying Classical piano, but she also accompanied her grandfather, Charlie Dyer when he played Old Time Fiddle tunes. When she met my Dad, she soon started appreciating and playing the big band & swing music that he loved so much. So it is appropriate after all these years that I would write a tune for my Mom that swings and grooves and has a great beat – Swingin’ Carolyn Blues. One day when driving home (on a road we call the Fergus / Orangeville Road), I started coming up with a melody. Appropriately named Road to Fergus, it represents the Scottish flair of my hometown of Fergus, Ontario.

In our live shows, I love to do an inspirational “talking song” and I have found a story I call Final Flight. Heavily modified to fit our format, the original narrative is from a 2008 blog by Airline Captain, Richard Rodriguez. It will surely bring a tear to your eye, especially with the beautiful arrangement of Dvorak’s Going Home as the accompaniment.

This CD would not be possible without the musical support and friendship from some great people. Steve Piticco on guitar and dobro, Darin Parise on 5-String banjo and pedal steel and Tyler Beckett on guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Tyler’s fiddle helps support several of the vocal numbers on the album and we “face off” a few times, trading ‘licks’. My Mom, Carolyn as always plays beautifully on the piano and supports the band in ways only a mom can! My sister, Kendra, always playing second fiddle… has done an amazing job again with the harmonies – both on fiddle and vocals. And she also adds depth with her accordion rhythm.

Twin Fiddle Express, “We love to play in sweet harmony… We’re glad you joined us for the memories!” - Scott

Musicians

Scott Woods: Fiddle, Vocals, Bass & Vocals
Carolyn Woods: Piano
Kendra (Woods) Norris: Fiddle, Vocals & Accordion
Tyler Beckett: Fiddle, Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin
Steve Piticco: Electric & Acoustic Guitar, Dobro
Darin Parise: Pedal Steel, 5-String Banjo

Credits

Produced by: Scott Woods
Musical Arrangements by: Scott Woods, SOCAN
Recorded & Mixed by: Scott Woods, McLeod Music, Fergus, Ontario
Mastered by: Doug Stronach, Eclipse Music Productions, Arthur, Ontario
Photography & Graphic Design by: Janet McGlynn, Lumin8 Strategy & Design Agency Inc., London, Ontario

Tracks

Andy's Centennial Two-Step

Renfrew County Waltz

Frank & Edit's Polka

Sam's Sugar Bush Jig,
Carman's Amber,
Shady Nook Jig

Take Me Back To Tulsa

Doris' Waltz

Sweet Georgia Brown

Hillary's Polka

Melody & Harmony's
Harmonious Melody

Shannon Waltz

Shelburne Reel

Juke Box Blues

I'm In The Mood For Love

Adios Polka

My Lily,
The Sweetness Of Mary,
Hughie Jim Paul's Reel

Ballad Of St Anne's Reel

Raemona

Roses For Mama
(Music: Green, Green Grass Of Home)

Angus Street Reel

Liner Notes

When I was four years old, I could hardly wait until my parents got me my first fiddle. And it was those who were content to just sit and tap their toes along with the familiar melodies.

I believe the draw to this fiddle music is more than just the tunes. I think it takes the listener back to a simpler time. Long before smart phones, computers and the many electronic distractions for today’s youth, folks would entertain themselves by playing, singing and dancing right at home or in the dance hall or in the barn. Fiddling represents that peacefulness in life that so many long for today.

I am honoured to have my Mom, Carolyn and her amazing piano playing on this recording, along with my sister Kendra with her accordion, Minnie Pearl routine and her incredible harmony fiddles. Angus Street Reel – written for the street on which Keri & I live in Fergus, Ontario; Frank & Edit’s Polka written for my in-laws - whose energetic Hungarian dancing at a recent wedding reception inspired the tune. Canada's settlers brought with them the traditional fiddle music of their homeland. Often times, the same tunes were played at social events and dances in rural communities by pioneers - whether of Irish, Scottish, French or other decent. What differed though, was the way in which these tunes were played.

Although this recording barely scratches the surface of these varying Canadian styles of fiddling, the Irish influence can be heard in the Rakes of Kildare Jig medley; Scottish influence from Cape Breton in the march A Trip to Mabou Ridge; and we have a beautiful French-Canadian composition Valse Gisele by Yvon Cuillerier.

We also explore how the Acadian fiddlers morphed their style after moving to southern Louisiana with Cajun Fiddle. The famous Metis tune Red River Jig and some eastern European influence in 2 polkas from western Canada. We even explored the influence on Canadian fiddling by the United States with a bluegrass arrangement of Kenny Baker's Washington County.

Although I have written several fiddle tunes over the years, I am not very prolific. I have however included a recent composition that encompasses my life time exposure to Canadian fiddling. Keri's Song is a serene Celtic-inspired tune written for my wife Keri.

This album is by no means a comprehensive coverage of Canadian fiddling. Nor do I claim to be an expert at these styles. Rather, it is my take on what makes a truly unique Canadian art form, with hopes the tradition will be passed on for many generations to come.

I am fortunate to have had some dedicated musicians share their passion on this CD: Carolyn, Kendra, Steve and Darin. We love sharing old time fiddle music with some country songs, swing, gospel and of course lots of good old fashioned fun. The shows all help charities, churches and community organizations raise funds for their special cause.

It gives me great pleasure to deliver the entertainment that the audiences crave, the old time music they can't get on the radio anymore or for that matter, on the stage. There have always been lots of requests for favourite tunes and so, we started collecting them. This collection now includes over 3,000 different tunes from audiences across the country.

The main reason for collecting the requests was to build a live show for the people, with tunes chosen by the people. This live show is naturally called 'By Request'. Certainly, not all 3,000 requests could make it to the live show so I decided to take the most requested tunes that had not previously been recorded on my earlier CD's and release this special collection for you to enjoy at home.

A hearty thank you to all of you who took the time to request tunes! For those who did not get their request played on the show or on this CD, don't worry, there are plenty more recordings and live shows coming from The Scott Woods Band in the future! I will keep your requests handy and will try to incorporate them into our future shows and CDs. Played in 3/4 time, it has a pulse like a wave that gives energy to inspire the feet to move. Festival of Waltzes is an album by request. During cross-Canada tours with the Scott Woods Show, many have asked for a recording of just waltzes. Several tunes requested are included. And some have also helped me to capture the championship title at the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest (in Shelburne, Ontario) and the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship (in Ottawa). The styles vary but this CD is - as the name indicates - a Festival of Waltzes. The Scott Woods Band was originally formed by my dad, Merv and was known as the Merv Woods Orchestra from 1950 until the 1990's. Many of the tunes on this recording have been played at our dances and shows for many years across the country.

Today, the band dedicates their musical and entertaining abilities to helping others. We play fund raising benefit concerts for churches, charities and other organizations raising money for their projects - some local and others on a global scale. Over the years, the Scott Woods Show has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for such charities. We invite you to pass the word about these shows to your friends. In a simpler life, long before television, computers, DVD's and video games, folks made their own fun by playing, enjoying and dancing to lively fiddle tunes. The melodies were simple, clean and uncluttered. They were presented in such a way that you just couldn't keep still. At least six generations on both sides of my family have been musicians, and the tradition continues. My great-grandfather Charlie Dyer was in the top 8 finalists at the first Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Contest in Shelburne, Ontario (1951); my mother Carolyn accompanied him on the piano. Forty-two years later, in 1993, she accompanied me on that very stage when I was fortunate enough to win that title for the first time. My father, Merv, has also competed in Shelburne, as have my two sisters - Elizabeth and Kendra, and my brother Bruce. It seemed only appropriate that they should all play on this recording.

My father has led a dance band called Merv Woods and His Orchestra since 1950, and our musical tastes have always reflected a variety of styles. My family have long been associated with the music of the violin. It has been a part of at least six generations of ancestors. Fiddlers in the family were in great demand for house parties, tea meetings and garden parties that were held in the rural communities of Ontario - in this way they brought brief spells of magic for the hard working settlers. My father, Mervyn Woods, began playing the violin at age eight, and dreamed of bringing the magic of the big band sound to dance halls in the Fergus area. In 1950 he formed Merv Woods and His Orchestra, and has been playing for dances ever since.

Over the years I have also learned to love the magic of the violin - both classical and old time fiddling. This recording is a blend of several styles.
